Agrobiotechnology Talk Series (32) : Virtual Carpological Herbarium of Fruits and Seeds

Updated: Feb 25, 2025

The carpological collection is a part of an herbarium, and it mainly consists of the fruits and seeds of plants that cannot be fixed onto a standard herbarium sheet. The collection is significant in plant species authentication, as these reproductive parts are unique in every species. 3D model reconstruction from a number of images could reflect the realistic morphology and genuine color of the fruits and seeds. The newly established database “Virtual Carpological Herbarium of Fruits and Seeds” was launched in 2022, and now it archives more than 500 3D models of local species. All the 3D models are presented with user-friendly interfaces for plant authentication, education and conservation. The philosophy and application of the database will be discussed in the talk.

There’s a lot of value packed into this post. I like that you’ve approached the subject in a way that feels practical rather than overly theoretical. It makes the message much easier to connect with, especially for people who may have experienced something similar. Your perspective also encourages readers to think for themselves, which I really appreciate. Overall, this was a meaningful and well-presented piece of content.

Nice to see a digital herbarium focused on fruits and seeds—the 3D models should make identification a lot less guessy. If you're into browser games at all, scritchyscratchy has guides for that scratch-card game, kind of a fun break from plant work.
